India, Australia Begin Joint Exercise AUSTRAHIND 2025

AUSTRAHIND 2025, the fourth edition of the annual joint military exercise between India and Australia, kicks off on October 13, 2025, in Perth, Australia. This bilateral engagement reflects the growing defence and strategic partnership between the two Indo-Pacific democracies. The exercise will continue until October 26 and is designed to improve operational synergy and deepen tactical interoperability between the two armies, particularly in complex urban warfare environments.

Participating Forces and Leadership

  • The Indian Army contingent, consisting of 120 personnel, has already arrived in Perth. It is led by a Battalion of Gorkha Rifles, with additional representation from other arms and services.
  • The Australian side will field equivalent forces, facilitating balanced and realistic joint operations.

Objectives of AUSTRAHIND 2025

This joint exercise aims to.

  • Enhance military cooperation between India and Australia
  • Improve interoperability in sub-conventional warfare, especially in urban and semi-urban terrain
  • Provide a platform to exchange tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs)
  • Foster tactical planning and execution skills at the company level

The focus is on joint company-level operations in open and semi-desert terrain, simulating real-world missions that demand agility, coordination, and adaptability.

Key Components of the Exercise

During AUSTRAHIND 2025, the troops will engage in,

  • Joint tactical drills and mock combat scenarios
  • Special arms and weapons handling training
  • Urban warfare simulations, integrating lessons from modern combat
  • Use of emerging technologies in battlefield conditions
  • Sessions on joint planning and situational response strategies

This exercise provides an excellent opportunity for both armies to hone operational capabilities, practice combined force application, and develop combat readiness in diverse terrain conditions.

Strategic Significance

India and Australia, both members of the Quad and strong proponents of a free and open Indo-Pacific, view defence cooperation as a cornerstone of their bilateral ties. AUSTRAHIND serves to,

  • Strengthen military-to-military relationships
  • Reinforce shared commitments to regional peace and stability
  • Build confidence for potential multilateral operations in the Indo-Pacific
