Sponsored by several nations, including Algeria, Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Palestine, the resolution demands an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. It reiterates the obligation for all parties to comply with international law, particularly regarding the protection of civilians. The resolution also calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and ensures humanitarian access.
The US proposed an amendment explicitly condemning Hamas for terrorist attacks and hostage-taking. India supported this amendment, reinforcing its stance against terrorism.
In October, India abstained from a similar resolution in the General Assembly. The current vote follows the UN Security Council’s recent failure to adopt a resolution due to a US veto.
