India Backs Urgent Ceasefire in Israel-Gaza Conflict

India voted in favor of a UN General Assembly (UNGA) resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict and the unconditional release of hostages.

Broad International Support

The 193-member UNGA adopted the resolution introduced by Egypt in an Emergency Special Session. The resolution garnered 153 votes in favor, with 23 nations abstaining and 10 voting against.

India’s Perspective

Ruchira Kamboj, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, emphasized the multifaceted nature of the crisis. India cited the terrorist attack in Israel on October 7, expressing concern for hostages, highlighting the humanitarian crisis, and emphasizing adherence to international humanitarian law. India underscored its commitment to finding a peaceful two-state solution to the longstanding Palestine question.

Resolution Details

Sponsored by several nations, including Algeria, Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Palestine, the resolution demands an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. It reiterates the obligation for all parties to comply with international law, particularly regarding the protection of civilians. The resolution also calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and ensures humanitarian access.

US Amendment and India’s Position

The US proposed an amendment explicitly condemning Hamas for terrorist attacks and hostage-taking. India supported this amendment, reinforcing its stance against terrorism.

Historical Context

In October, India abstained from a similar resolution in the General Assembly. The current vote follows the UN Security Council’s recent failure to adopt a resolution due to a US veto.

Humanitarian Impact

Over 1,200 casualties, including 33 children, resulted from attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian groups on October 7. The Gaza Ministry of Health reports over 18,205 Palestinians killed, with approximately 70% being women and children. Additionally, about 49,645 are reportedly injured, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
