India & Bangladesh inks 5 MoU to Boost Cooperation

India and Bangladesh have signed five Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) to further boost bilateral cooperation. The signing of the MoUs took place on 27 March 2021, between Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in Dhaka. Indian PM Narendra Modiji was on a two-day official visit to Bangladesh to join the twin celebrations of Bangladeshi Founding Father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary and the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence in 1971. This is the first trip of PM Modi to a foreign country since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

MoUs were signed in the following areas

  • Disaster management, resilience, and mitigation.
  • Cooperation between Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC) and National Cadet Corps of India (INCC).
  • Establishment of a framework of cooperation in the area of trade remedial measures between Bangladesh and India.
  • Supply of ICT equipment, courseware, and reference books and training for Bangladesh-Bharat Digital Service & Employment and Training (BDSET) Centre.
  • Establishment of sports facilities in Rajshahi College field and surrounding areas.

Other key takeaways from the visit

  • India gifted 109 ambulances to Bangladesh as well as 1.2 million doses of the Covishield vaccine.
  • India released a silver coin to commemorate 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
  • Bangladesh released a gold coin to commemorate the Mujib Borsho (the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and 50 years of the Bangladesh war of liberation).
