India Launches LoA Regime for High-Seas Fishing
India has launched the new Letter of Authorisation (LoA) regime for the sustainable high-seas fishing, it marks the important step towards unlocking the country’s vast marine resources and strengthening the its Blue Economy. This initiative is launched by the Honourable Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, it aims to enable Indian fishing vessels to operate beyond the coastal waters in a sustainable manner, it improve the incomes of the fishing communities and it will expands India’s presence in the global seafood export market.
The Letter of Authorisation (LoA) is an essential regulatory system which allows Indian fishing vessels to conduct fishing activities and related operations in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and open seas.
The objective of this scheme is to promote sustainable deep-sea fishing by increasing fishermen access to some high-value species while alleviating pressure on coastal fisheries that have been exploited excessively.
The procedure for getting the authorisation became simpler and more transparent due to the above-mentioned achievements.
Despite having some of the biggest marine resource bases, fishing activities in India have mostly been concentrated within the distance of 40 to 50 nautical miles from the shore.

This new scheme aims to promote Indian fishermen under the safe and sustainable exploitation of the deeper sea resources and at the same time create new job opportunities for them in a responsible manner.

As per the official statements,
Under the new LoA system, it is expected that India’s position in the global seafood industry will get stronger with the advancement in the export of quality marine products.
According to Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh, this plan is a historical milestone for India’s marine fisheries industry.
He mentioned that the government has invested more than ₹39,000 crore in the fisheries sector through its important schemes and consequently achieved the following,
At the event, the Odisha Deep Sea Fishing Mission (2026-2036) was also introduced.
Speaking at the occasion, the chief minister of the state, Mohan Charan Majhi, announced the allocation of ₹2,295.45 crores by the state for the flagship project for a span of ten years.
