India Overtakes China as Top Exporter of Cotton Products to the US in 2025

India has overtaken the China to become the largest exporter of cotton products to the United States in 2025. This details are according to the latest global market analysis by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Cotton products include apparel, garments and home textiles. They form the  significant part of global textile trade. In the year 2025 US imports of cotton products from India reached around 0.6 million tonnes and then it is surpassing China’s exports of approximately 0.5 million tonnes.

India Cotton Exports to the US In 2025

The increase in India cotton exports to the US in 2025 highlights the growing competitiveness of India’s textile industry.

The Indian manufacturers have expanded the presence in the American market by supplying a wide range of cotton based products.

The US imported about 3.3 million tonnes of cotton products in 2025 overall.

In which it is remained nearly the same as the 15 year average import level.

Despite stable overall imports but India managed to increase its share becoming the leading supplier to the US market.

Decline of China’s Share

China’s share in the US cotton products market has declined significantly over the past decade.

According to the USDA report the imports from China dropped to 0.5 million tonnes in 2025 and it shows changing patterns globally.

One key reason behind this is that decline is the imposition of higher tariffs by the United States on Chinese goods.

The tariff is which ranged between 10 percent and 125 percent.

These tariffs encouraged American companies to diversify their sourcing away from China.

Other Countries Market Share in the US

While India cotton exports to the US increased significantly, several other countries also benefited from the changing trade environment.

Nations such as Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Mexico and Cambodia expanded the exports to the United States.

This shift reflects the broader global trend where companies are building more diversified supply chains to reduce dependence on a single country.

Why India Has an Advantage in the Global Cotton Trade

India’s success in the global cotton product trade is partly due to its vertically integrated textile supply chain.

This means that the entire production process from cotton cultivation to fabric manufacturing and garment production can be carried out within the country.

This type of integration will allows Indian companies to comply more easily with traceability and supply chain transparency requirements.
