India to celebrate National Sports Day 2025 As Fitness Movement (1)
India is set to celebrate National Sports Day 2025 as a three-day nationwide fitness and sports movement from August 29 to 31, under the leadership of Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. Dedicated to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, the campaign aims to boost physical activity, community engagement, and the spirit of sportsmanship across the country through the Fit India Mission.
Observed every year on August 29, National Sports Day commemorates the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, widely regarded as one of the greatest hockey players in history. Since 2012, the day has been a national event and was also the platform for launching the Fit India Movement in 2019. This year’s extended celebration brings greater scope and participation to an already significant occasion.
The central message of 2025’s campaign—“Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Main”—calls on citizens to spend at least 60 minutes a day engaging in any form of physical activity. The initiative aims to combat lifestyle diseases, promote mental well-being, and foster healthy routines across age groups.
With over 35 crore participants expected, the campaign includes students, youth clubs, panchayats, corporates, and sports organisations like the Indian Olympic Association, Paralympic Committee of India, and Sports Authority of India. Activities will be held in schools, residential areas, parks, and public spaces under the slogan “Har Gali, Har Maidan, Khele Saara Hindustan.”
Prominent athletes such as Pranav Soorma, Sumit Antil, Bhavani Devi, Shreyasi Singh, and Vishnu Saravanan will join from their respective hometowns or training bases, inspiring local communities. Renowned names like Abhinav Bindra, Sunil Chhetri, PV Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu, Manika Batra, and Murali Sreeshankar have also urged people to participate actively.
