In a landmark moment for India-UK defence cooperation, both nations conducted their first-ever Combined Carrier Strike Group (CSG) exercise during Exercise Konkan 2025 off India’s western coast. The historic drills, held from October 5–9, involved full-scale air-sea warfare operations, highlighting growing strategic synergy in the Indo-Pacific region.

Exercise Konkan 2025: A Strategic Leap

Exercise Konkan is a biennial bilateral naval exercise between the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom, launched in 2004. Over the years, it has evolved from basic interoperability drills to complex maritime warfare exercises, reinforcing defence diplomacy and mutual trust.

The 2025 edition was especially significant as it marked,

  • The first time both countries deployed their aircraft carriers in a joint strike group format
  • A broader framework of multi-nation maritime partnership, with ships from Norway and Japan also participating
