Indian Army’s New Tech Unit STEAG

The Indian Army has set up a specialized technology unit called Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group (STEAG) to research and evaluate next-generation communication technologies.

Purpose of STEAG

STEAG will focus on studying and adapting technologies like:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • 5G and 6G networks
  • Machine Learning
  • Quantum Technologies

The aim is to develop advanced communication capabilities for defence applications and future warfare.

Need for Advanced Communication Technologies

The Indian Army realizes that effective communication is crucial for military operations. The side with better communication technologies and ability to share information will have an advantage over the enemy.

Role of STEAG

Under the Corps of Signals

  • STEAG will operate under the Corps of Signals, which handles military communications.

Research and Development

  • It will research and develop tailored technologies across the spectrum of wired and wireless systems, including:
    • Electronic exchanges
    • Mobile communications
    • Software Defined Radios (SDR)
    • Electronic Warfare (EW) systems
    • 5G and 6G networks
    • Quantum Technologies
    • Artificial Intelligence
    • Machine Learning

Premier Technology Organization

  • STEAG will be a premier organization to harness niche technology, identify suitable use-cases for defence, and foster collaboration with academia and industry.

Technical Support

  • The unit will provide technical scouting, evaluation, development, management of core ICT solutions, and user interface support by maintaining and upgrading contemporary technologies.

Fostering Self-Reliance

Aligning with Atmanirbhar Bharat and Start-Up India initiatives, STEAG will help bridge the gap between the Armed Forces and industry/academia in high-end communication technologies.

The new Centre of Excellence is expected to be a game-changer in fostering self-reliance in advanced communication technologies, which have been monopolized by select countries with advanced economies and research ecosystems.
