Indian Coast Guard’s Fast Patrol Vessel ‘Atal’ Launched in Goa

India took another significant step in enhancing its coastal defense and maritime surveillance capabilities with the launch of the Indian Coast Guard’s latest Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV), ‘Atal’, in Goa. The vessel, launched by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) at Vasco da Gama, marks the sixth addition in a series of eight state-of-the-art FPVs designed and built indigenously, underlining the nation’s commitment to ‘Atmanirbharta’ in defense manufacturing.

A Leap Towards Self-Reliance in Shipbuilding

The Fast Patrol Vessel ‘Atal’ (Yard 1275) has been designed and constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited, a premier Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) functioning under the Ministry of Defence. This launch reflects India’s growing capability to produce advanced maritime defense systems within the country, reducing dependency on foreign technologies.

The launch of ‘Atal’ is a testament to the indomitable spirit of Team GSL, showcasing their innovation, excellence, and commitment to indigenisation, even while facing global supply chain challenges.

Features and Capabilities of FPV ‘Atal’

The newly launched FPV ‘Atal’ comes equipped with advanced features designed to enhance India’s maritime vigilance and operational efficiency.

Dimensions & Displacement: The vessel measures 52 metres in length, has an 8-metre beam, and a 320-tonne displacement, making it agile and suitable for swift maritime missions.

Operational Roles: It is built to undertake a wide range of missions, including coastal patrols, island security, offshore asset protection, anti-smuggling operations, anti-piracy missions, and search and rescue operations.

State-of-the-Art Design: Developed in-house by GSL, the vessel exemplifies modern naval architecture, ensuring both speed and stability, crucial for critical maritime missions.

National Security and Strategic Significance

The launch of FPV ‘Atal’ significantly augments India’s maritime domain awareness and strengthens national security along its vast coastline. With increasing geopolitical tensions in the Indian Ocean region and threats from smuggling and piracy, such patrol vessels serve as a frontline defense mechanism.

The chief guest at the launch, Rozy Agarwal, Principal Internal Financial Advisor (PIFA) at Coast Guard Headquarters, praised GSL’s robust execution capabilities and highlighted the vessel’s role in advancing the nation’s maritime security framework.

Participation of Key Stakeholders

The launch event was attended by senior dignitaries from the Indian Coast Guard, the Indian Navy, the Ministry of Defence, and representatives of strategic industry partners, reflecting the collaborative effort in strengthening India’s defense preparedness.
