Indian Navy’s ‘Shruti’ NGOPV Launched at GRSE Kolkata

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) launched its second NGOPV, “Shruti”, at their Kolkata shipyard on August 11, 2026. Designated as Yard 3037, the vessel is being built for the Indian Navy as part of a larger NGOPV series of 11 ships. This launch marks another milestone in the India’s effort towards indigenization of naval ships and increasing of maritime surveillance capability. Four vessels are being built by GRSE out of the 11 NGOPVs as part of this programme, with both Kolkata shipyard and Goa Shipyard Limited working on them concurrently.

Shruti Launched at GRSE Kolkata

Shruti, the second NGOPV, has been formally launched at GRSE’s Kolkata shipyard on August 11.

Wife of Vice Admiral Sanjay Sadhu, Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition, Mrs Manika Sadhu launched the vessel.

Senior officers and officials from the Indian Navy, Ministry of Defence and GRSE were present at the launching ceremony.

The vessel has been designated as Yard 3037.

Second NGOPV from GRSE

Following Sanghmitra, Shruti is the second NGOPV that has been launched by GRSE.

Sanghmitra was launched in May 20, 2026, implying that less than three months elapsed before launching the second vessel.

It is indicative of how hard GRSE has tried to adhere to a faster timeline in building and delivering the next generation of patrol vessels for the Indian Navy.

NGOPV Programme

The Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel programme forms part of the Indian Navy’s attempts at boosting their number of patrol vessels.

The programme in general concerns 11 vessels that will be built in different Indian shipyards.

GRSE will be building four NGOPVs whereas Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) will also contribute to the programme.

The vessels will help the Navy in monitoring the vast waters of India as well as dealing with various maritime security requirements.

Role of GRSE in Building Ships for Indian Navy

GRSE, whose headquarters is located in Kolkata, is one of the important public sector shipbuilders in India.

GRSE has manufactured many warships and other types of ships for Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard.

Building of four NGOPVs at GRSE is also relevant in view of the development of indigenous manufacturing of military equipment in India.

Four NGOPVs Under Construction by GRSE

GRSE is constructing four NGOPVs as part of the broader 11 ship project of the Navy.

The first two NGOPVs under construction from GRSE are,

• Sanghmitra – first NGOPV commissioned on May 20, 2026
• Shruti – second NGOPV commissioned on August 11, 2026

Two more NGOPVs under construction at GRSE are likely to be launched by the end of 2026-27 financial year.
