Indian Railways ₹238 Crore Upgrade Plan for Jammu–Katra Rail Section Explained
The Indian Railways has announced that the Jammu-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra rail section will undergo the critical protection and rehabilitation works worth ₹238 crore. This project aims to strengthen passenger safety, improve operational reliability and will make the strategically important route more resilient against the difficult terrain.
Indian Railways has sanctioned around the ₹238 crore for major safety and infrastructure strengthening works on the Jammu-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra section under Northern Railway.
The approved package focuses on to improving the long-term operational safety on this critical rail corridor.
The route is heavily used by the pilgrims travelling to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and it holds strategic connectivity importance in Jammu and Kashmir.
The newly approved project includes the slope stabilization works in vulnerable areas.
Tunnel rehabilitation and seepage treatment will also be carried out to address the structural risks.
To strengthen the critical infrastructure against the environmental and geological threats bridge protection work was also sanctioned.
Additional safety interventions will be implemented at the identified high-risk locations.
The Jammu-Katra route passes through the challenging mountainous terrain.
This route has faced the multiple engineering difficulties because the location covered with the unstable slopes, difficult geological formations and harsh weather conditions.
Such vulnerabilities can impact the train safety, infrastructure durability and service reliability.
The new investment is aims to reducing these risks significantly.
Respectable Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had said the decision reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening railway safety in difficult terrains.
He also stated that detailed technical assessments of bridges, tunnels and cuttings were conducted before approving the project.
According to the minister, this works will improve the long-term resilience of this strategically important railway section.
The Jammu-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra section is much more than just a pilgrimage route.
It serves as the crucial transport link in the northern region.
