India’s BrahMos vs Iran’s Hoveyzeh Cruise Missile: Speed and Range Comparison
Cruise missiles play an important role in modern warfare because they can strike targets with high precision from long distances. Two notable cruise missiles in Asia are India’s BrahMos and Iran’s Hoveyzeh. Both are designed for precision land-attack missions, but they differ significantly in speed, range, and operational purpose.
The BrahMos cruise missile is a joint development project between India and Russia. It is one of the fastest operational cruise missiles in the world and forms a key part of India’s strategic strike capability.
The major strength of BrahMos is its extremely high speed, which makes it very difficult for enemy air defense systems to intercept. Its ability to be launched from multiple platforms also gives India greater flexibility in military operations.
The Hoveyzeh cruise missile was unveiled by Iran in 2019. It is part of Iran’s Soumar family of long-range cruise missiles and is designed primarily for long-distance land attack missions.
The main advantage of the Hoveyzeh missile is its long operational range, which allows it to strike targets located far away from the launch site.
| Feature | BrahMos (India) | Hoveyzeh (Iran) |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Supersonic Cruise Missile | Subsonic Cruise Missile |
| Speed | Mach 2.8–3.0 | Below Mach 1 |
| Range | 290–500 km | Around 1,350 km |
| Warhead | 200–300 kg | Not officially confirmed |
| Launch Platforms | Land, Air, Sea, Submarine | Mainly Ground Launch |
| Operational Role | Anti-ship and precision land attack | Long-range land attack |
Speed Advantage – BrahMos
BrahMos is significantly faster because it travels at supersonic speed, enabling it to reach targets quickly and making interception very difficult.
Range Advantage – Hoveyzeh
Hoveyzeh has a much longer range, allowing it to strike targets more than 1,300 km away.
Operational Role
BrahMos is used for rapid tactical strikes against ships and land targets, while Hoveyzeh is designed mainly for strategic long-range land attacks.
Technology Approach
BrahMos uses a ramjet propulsion system to maintain supersonic speed, whereas Hoveyzeh uses a turbojet engine optimized for longer endurance at lower speed.
