India’s Fish Production Doubles in a Decade, Employment Sees Massive Boost
India’s fisheries and aquaculture sector has emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments of the rural economy. Backed by sustained government support, the sector has witnessed a sharp rise in production, exports, and employment over the last decade. From supporting millions of livelihoods to strengthening food and nutritional security, fisheries are now a key pillar of India’s agricultural growth story.
India’s fish production rose to 197.75 lakh tonnes in FY 2024–25, up from 95.79 lakh tonnes in FY 2013-14. Government schemes since 2014–15 have generated 74.66 lakh employment opportunities across the fisheries value chain.
India has recorded a 106% increase in fish production over the last decade, making it the world’s second-largest fish producer with an 8% share in global output. Average aquaculture productivity has increased to 4.77 tonnes per hectare, reflecting improved technology, better seed quality, and scientific farming practices. The sector now contributes 7.43% to Agriculture GVA, the highest among agri and allied activities.
Since 2015, the Department of Fisheries has approved or announced cumulative investments of ₹38,572 crore through schemes like Blue Revolution, FIDF, PMMSY, and PMMKSSY. Projects worth ₹32,723 crore have been approved since 2014–15, focusing on infrastructure, value chains, cold storage, harbours, and modern aquaculture systems.
The fisheries sector now supports livelihoods of nearly 3 crore fishers and fish farmers. Since 2014–15, about 74.66 lakh jobs (direct and indirect) have been created. Social security measures include Group Accidental Insurance for 34.71 lakh fishers, nutritional support during fishing ban periods, and 4.49 lakh Kisan Credit Cards with loans worth ₹3,569.60 crore, ensuring financial inclusion and income stability.
India is a global leader in aquaculture and shrimp exports. During 2023-24, India exported 16.98 lakh tonnes of seafood worth ₹62,408 crore. Improved processing infrastructure, quality standards, and global market access have strengthened India’s position as a reliable seafood supplier.
