India’s Internet Subscribers Cross 1.11 Billion in June 2026: TRAI Report
India’stotal number of the internet subscriptions stands at 1,114.17 million (1.114 billion) as of June 2026, having risen from 1,092.79 million as of March, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The increase has been witnessed in broadband subscriptions, while there has been a reduction in narrowband subscriptions. The report brings to light the sustained growth in internet connectivity in India, along with a huge disparity between rural and urban internet penetration. It also shows a higher average revenue per user (ARPU) for prepaid subscriptions than postpaid subscriptions in the quarter ended June 2026.
There has been an increase in the number of the internet subscribers in India from March to June 2026, recording a growth rate of 1.96% to reach 1,114.17 million.
In June 2026, the number of wireless internet subscribers was 1,066.43 million, while the number of wired subscribers was 47.73 million.
Broadband internet subscriptions have grown from 1,065.88 million in March to 1,087.50 million in June 2026, indicating an increase of 2.03%. Narrowband internet subscriptions, on the other hand, have decreased by 0.89%.
Internet penetration in India stood at around 77.94 subscribers per 100 people at the end of the June 2026. Also, the difference between urban and rural areas remained substantial.
In case of Urban Internet penetration, the figure exceeded 100 per 100 persons since the metric used is subscription and not people. A single individual might subscribe for more than one connection. Hence, the number should not be considered as the proportion of Internet users among the population.
The figure of 49.07 shows that the Internet penetration was relatively lower in the rural area.
The TRAI report highlighted another development that included an increase in the number of telephone subscribers in urban and rural India in the quarter under review.
