India’s National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) A Rising Force in Real-Time Intelligence
In the evolving landscape of national security and cyber intelligence, India’s National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) has emerged as a powerful tool for real-time data access and integrated intelligence. Conceptualised in the aftermath of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, NATGRID has been developed to provide central and state security agencies with seamless access to critical data from government and private sources. Since becoming operational last year, NATGRID has logged around 45,000 intelligence queries per month, indicating its growing utility in both counter-terrorism and criminal investigations.
NATGRID (National Intelligence Grid) is an integrated intelligence platform aimed at improving information-sharing across multiple law enforcement and intelligence agencies. It serves as a centralised data hub, offering real-time and secure access to over 20 different databases from agencies like UIDAI (Aadhaar), banks, airlines, telecom, and transport departments.
It was conceptualised in 2009 in response to the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, which highlighted the lack of coordination and data access among agencies during crises.
Initially, NATGRID access was limited to central intelligence and investigative agencies like the Intelligence Bureau (IB), RAW, and Enforcement Directorate (ED). However, as of 2025, access has now been extended to Superintendent of Police (SP)-level officers at the State level.
This decision followed recommendations made during the annual DGP conference, where enhanced reliance on NATGRID was encouraged to expedite and modernise investigations.
With approximately 45,000 monthly data access requests, NATGRID is increasingly seen as a vital resource in,
However, State police officials have reported some operational challenges, including:
NATGRID plays a central role in India’s cybersecurity and counter-terrorism architecture, particularly in light of rising cyber threats. Over 20 lakh cyber incidents were reported in 2024 alone, prompting greater integration of intelligence platforms with digital security frameworks.
Through its secure, encrypted interface, NATGRID enables,
Its integration with platforms like CCTNS and efforts to connect with more databases like GSTN and telecom operators are part of the government’s push for data-driven policing.
NATGRID addresses key weaknesses exposed in the past,
By enabling faster, wider, and more secure access to critical information, NATGRID supports investigations in terror cases, financial frauds, cyber threats, and organised crime. It is gradually becoming India’s most comprehensive digital investigation infrastructure.
