In a significant milestone for India’s defense capability, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Army have successfully conducted trials of the indigenously designed and developed Man Portable Anti-tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) Weapon System. This indigenous development marks a crucial step towards achieving self-reliance in advanced technology-based defense systems, as underscored by Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh.
The MPATGM Weapon System is a comprehensive solution that includes the MPATGM missile, Launcher, Target Acquisition System, and the Fire Control Unit. This indigenous system has been subjected to extensive field evaluations and flight configuration trials to validate its technological superiority and compliance with the General Staff Qualitative Requirements set by the Indian Army.
The MPATGM Weapon System has undergone an adequate number of missile firing trials, with the Warhead Flight Trials being successfully conducted at the Pokhran Field Firing Range, Rajasthan, on April 13, 2024. The trials have demonstrated remarkable performance of the missile and its warhead, meeting the stipulated operational requirements.
One of the key achievements of the MPATGM system is its capability to defeat modern armour-protected Main Battle Tanks. The successful completion of penetration trials for the Tandem Warhead System has validated the system’s effectiveness against the latest armor protection technologies.
The MPATGM Weapon System boasts several advanced features that enhance its combat effectiveness. It is equipped with a dual-mode seeker, providing both day and night targeting capabilities. Additionally, the system has a top-attack capability, which is a valuable asset in tank warfare.
The integration of the Target Acquisition System and the Fire Control Unit ensures the seamless operation of the MPATGM, enabling accurate target tracking and engagement. These advanced features contribute to the overall lethality and precision of the weapon system.
The successful development and trials of the MPATGM Weapon System hold immense significance for India’s defense capabilities. This indigenous achievement aligns with the government’s vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) and the push for indigenous defense technology development.
The MPATGM system’s performance and capabilities have the potential to significantly strengthen the Indian Army’s anti-tank capabilities, providing a reliable and effective solution for addressing modern armored threats. Moreover, the indigenous development of such a sophisticated weapon system reduces India’s dependence on foreign imports, contributing to the country’s strategic autonomy.
The successful development of the MPATGM Weapon System is the result of a collaborative effort between the DRDO and the Indian Army. The DRDO, as the premier defense research organization in India, has played a pivotal role in the design, development, and testing of this indigenous system.
The Indian Army, in turn, has provided valuable inputs and feedback throughout the development process, ensuring that the MPATGM system meets the operational requirements and addresses the evolving needs of the armed forces. This synergistic collaboration between the DRDO and the Indian Army has been instrumental in achieving this milestone.
