IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers Resigns & Rahul Bhatia Steps In as Interim Chief
IndiGo has announced that its Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers has resigned with immediate effect. This resign comes as citing personal reasons. This resignation comes around three months after a major operational disruption. Due to this caused thousands of flight cancellations across the airline’s network. Following the leadership change IndiGo promoter and Managing Director Rahul Bhatia will temporarily take charge of the airline as interim CEO. IndiGo is the India’s Largest Airline and conducting operations domestic and internationally.
The IndiGo hasconfirmed that Rahul Bhatia who is also the Managing Director of InterGlobe Aviation.
He will oversee the company’s operations during the transition period.
The board members believes his experience with the airline will help stabilize operations and strengthen management.
The leadership change comes at a crucial time for IndiGo as the airline continues to focus on restoring operational stability and improving service reliability.
The resignation follows a big operational crisis faced by IndiGo in December 2025. In that Month the airline cancelled more than 4,200 flights between December 1 and December 9. This disruption created widespread inconvenience for passengers across India.
The crisis was largely triggered by difficulties in managing pilot duty rosters after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) implemented stricter flight duty time regulations.
These rules increased mandatory weekly rest periods for pilots and reduced the number of hours they could fly at night.
Pieter Elbers joined IndiGo as CEO in September 2022 during a period when the airline was preparing for its next phase of international expansion.
His appointment come after Ronojoy Dutta adn he was led the airline through the pandemic years stepped down.
Before joining IndiGo Elbers served as the President and CEO of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines since 2014.
His global aviation experience was seen as valuable in helping the airline expand internationally and strengthen its position as a major aviation player.
With Pieter Elbers stepping down as CEO. Rahul Bhatia has expressed a strong commitment to ensuring stability and reliability in the airline’s operations.
He acknowledge the disruptions caused during the operational crisis.
He emphasized the need to prevent such incidents in the future.
Bhatia stated that the airline will continue focusing on operational excellence, customer service and stakeholder trust.
