The Indian Navy took a significant stride in fortifying its operational prowess with the commissioning of its new base, INS Jatayu, at Minicoy island of Lakshadweep. This strategic move aims to enhance the Navy’s capabilities and reach in the vital Indian Ocean region, reinforcing its efforts in anti-piracy and anti-narcotics operations in the Western Arabian Sea.
The commissioning ceremony of INS Jatayu was graced by Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, along with notable dignitaries including Lakshadweep administrator Praful Patel, Southern Naval Command Chief Vice Admiral V Srinivas, and Western Naval Command Chief Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh. The event marked a pivotal moment in the Indian Navy’s commitment to safeguarding maritime security.
Inspired by the valorous character from the epic Ramayana, Jatayu, the base was named to honor the spirit of selfless service and unwavering dedication. Admiral Kumar highlighted Jatayu’s role as the ‘first responder’ in the Ramayana, symbolizing service before self, echoing the ethos of the Indian Navy’s commitment to security and surveillance.
Admiral Kumar emphasized the strategic importance of Lakshadweep amidst prevailing geopolitical developments. With the Indian Ocean region witnessing a surge in maritime threats including terror, crime, and piracy, INS Jatayu emerges as a crucial asset in maintaining maritime domain awareness and safeguarding national interests.
Naval Officer-in-Charge (Lakshadweep) Captain Lovekesh Thakur underscored the significance of Minicoy’s location on traditional trade routes, making it a strategic vantage point for gathering vital information on shipping movements. INS Jatayu’s enhanced surveillance capabilities serve as a cornerstone in bolstering India’s maritime security posture, providing a pivotal starting point for deploying units effectively.
