International Day of Families 2024 Observed on May 15th

Every year on May 15th, we celebrate the International Day of Families. It’s a special day to recognize how essential families are in our society. The United Nations established this day in 1994 to help people understand why families matter, what challenges they might face, and to encourage people to come together in support.

The Origins of International Day of Families

The idea for the International Day of Families emerged in 1989 when the UN declared 1994 as the International Year of the Family. They recognized the changing social and economic landscapes that were impacting families worldwide. The International Day of Families was created to continue the conversation about families and the issues they face.

Significance: Families are the Building Blocks of Society

Strong families provide love, support, and a sense of belonging to their members. This day reminds us of the vital role families play and encourages us to work together to create a world where all families can thrive.

2024 Theme: ‘Families & Climate Change: International Year Of The Family + 30’

Climate change negatively impacts the health and well-being of families through increased pollution and extreme weather events. These events often lead to forced displacement and loss of livelihoods for families, impacting agricultural productivity and access to water, intensifying hunger and vulnerability.

Empowering families through education, changing consumption habits, and advocacy is critical for meaningful and effective climate action. Families pass values across generations, so instilling sustainable habits and climate awareness from an early age is important.

Taking Action: Families as Drivers of Sustainable Change

The 2024 International Day of Families aims to raise awareness of how climate change impacts families and the role families can play in climate action. Through family and community initiatives, we can foster climate action with education, access to information, training, and community participation.

Families as consumers and advocates can drive the transition to a circular economy based on minimizing waste and regenerating natural resources. Integrating these principles into early childhood education can help build a sustainable economic model for the future.

On this International Day of Families, let us celebrate the diverse roles families play and their potential to drive positive change for a more sustainable world.
