IPL 2025: Major Rule Changes and Their Impact on the Tournament
As the much-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season is set to commence on March 22, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced several key rule changes that are expected to significantly impact the dynamics of the tournament. During a recent meeting held at BCCI Headquarters in Mumbai, captains of various franchises and match referees discussed and approved these updates. From the lifting of the saliva ban to the continuation of the Impact Player rule, these modifications aim to enhance the game while addressing certain challenges faced in previous seasons. Let’s delve into the major updates for IPL 2025.
One of the most significant rule changes for IPL 2025 is the revocation of the saliva ban, which was initially implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic as a health and safety measure.
During the peak of the pandemic, health experts and cricket governing bodies, including the International Cricket Council (ICC), introduced the saliva ban to reduce the risk of virus transmission. Bowlers had to rely solely on sweat to shine the ball, which significantly impacted their ability to generate swing, especially in the shorter format of the game.
With the lifting of the saliva ban, bowlers, particularly pacers, will now have the advantage of using saliva to maintain the shine on one side of the ball. This is expected to bring back the art of swing and reverse swing, which had diminished in recent seasons. Several players, including senior pacers like Mohammed Shami and Tim Southee, have advocated for this rule change, stating that it will help maintain a fair balance between bat and ball.
To counter the dew factor, which has often given an unfair advantage to teams batting second, the BCCI has introduced a rule that allows the use of a second ball in the second innings of evening games.
The Impact Player rule, which was introduced in IPL 2023, has now been officially extended till 2027. This rule allows teams to make a strategic substitution of one player during a match, providing flexibility in team combinations.
While the rule has added a new dimension to the game, opinions among captains and players remain divided:
A major technological advancement in IPL 2025 is the expansion of the Decision Review System (DRS) to cover wide and height-based no-balls.
The new rules introduced for IPL 2025 are expected to bring major strategic shifts in the tournament. Here’s how these changes might affect different aspects of the game:
