Iran and Oman Reach Strait of Hormuz Shipping Route Agreement

An agreement was concluded between Iran and Oman on the route map of ships in the Strait of Hormuz, it representing progress in their work on improving the situation with navigation in one of the strategically important parts of the world. It was reported by the spokesman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baghaei, on August 15, 2026. In his opinion, progress was achieved after several weeks of negotiations, but it does not signify a complete return of commercial shipping to normalcy. Tehran is still tying the reopening and security arrangements to the actions of the US according to the memorandum signed in June.

What Happened Between Iran and Oman?

Negotiations on the safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz began in the three months that followed signing the memorandum of understanding on June 18th, 2026.

According to Baghaei, negotiations proceeded positively during the last three weeks. They included representatives from Iran’s Foreign Ministry and its ministries of Defence, Security, and Environment.

What is the Significance of the Shipping Route Agreement?

The agreement has been made in order to ensure the safe passage of the ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Both Iran and Oman are located on the borders of this strategically important waterway, thus making the coordination between both of these nations necessary.

According to Tehran, the agreement is an independent agreement made by Iran and Oman and is focused only on navigation and doesn’t change the sovereignty of both of these nations over the strategically important waterway.

What is the Significance of the Strait of Hormuz?

Strait of Hormuz acts as a connection between the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman as well as the Arabian Sea. The geographical importance of this waterway makes it one of the most important maritime routes of the world.

This waterway is of significance for the transportation of international energy sources and international trade activities.

Why is Normal Shipping Still Associated with US Activities?

Even after agreeing on navigational channels, Iran believes that restoration of safety and normal commerce still depends on certain conditions.

According to Baghaei, Iran wants to have an end to “illegal” activities of the US, military intimidation, and the naval blockade. Also, Iran has been demanding compensation in relation to “the breaches of US obligations during the past two months.”

The problem is related to the memorandum of understanding signed by Iran and the US on June 18 where the development of a new navigational system was entrusted to Iran and Oman in the Strait of Hormuz.
