Who is Tukaram Mundhe? Know the IAS Officer Leading Maharashtra’s FDA Crackdown
Tukaram Mundhe, an IAS officer and Commissioner of the Maharashtra FDA (Food & Drug Administration), has been known for his hard-line approach towards food and drug adulteration within the State.
The FDA of Maharashtra, under the guidance of Tukaram Mundhe, has conducted raids, seizures, and closures of companies suspected of being non-compliant with food and drug laws. Some of these firms have been old-established business houses having a legacy of many years.
It has been claimed by Tukaram Mundhe that his first concern is to make sure that people get safe food and medicines. His rigorous administrative approach has made him respected among citizens but at the same time criticized by some sectors of the administration/political structure.
Tukaram Mundhe is an IAS officer with a Maharashtra cadre who is known to be very administratively minded and has often been seen making attempts to take action against government rule violations.
He belongs to a very poor farmer family of the Marathwada area in the state of Maharashtra. He was brought up in conditions of drought and poverty.
According to Mundhe, he had firsthand experience of agriculture as he helped his family run their farm and had gone with his parents to sell vegetables from the market. He used to wake up early to irrigate the crops and knew the hardships that farmers face in dependence on the rains.
Also, he used to walk barefoot to his Zilla Parishad school. According to him, these conditions have made him decide to join the civil services.
Mundhe appeared in the Civil Services Examination conducted by the UPSC in 2005 and came out as the 20th ranked candidate.
While most aspirants have the luxury of being coached thoroughly and having professional links, Mundhe has brought out the humble nature of his background and not belonging to a dynasty of public servants.
He was then allotted Maharashtra Cadre and began his career of serving in different administrative positions in the state.
Education of Tukaram Mundhe
Mundhe has done his Bachelors Degree from Government College of Arts and Science, Aurangabad, popularly called Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, in 1996.
Subsequently, he completed his Masters degree in Political Science from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in 1998.

He has gained a reputation for cracking down on any activity he feels goes against the rule of law or against the interest of people.
During the early part of his career, he cracked down on the sand mafia and reportedly got threats to his life. At Solapur, he did not let go of his efforts despite reports of intimidation of him.
At the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), he acted against contract drivers who were chronically absent. 158 contract drivers were fired in 2017-18, which led to an outcry from the union and political opposition.
His administration style has always made him confront powerful lobbies but also has earned him popularity among the masses.
With the appointment of Mundhe as Health Commissioner in 2022, efforts were undertaken to bring accountability in government health centers.
It reportedly involved the midnight checks on Primary Health Centers, linking attendance and salary through biometrics, and initiating legal procedures against doctors running their own clinics within government working hours.
He was moved from the post in 2023.
Another role of Mundhe that drew attention was his work as Municipal Commissioner of Navi Mumbai.
In 2016, he scrapped some projects which he felt were not essential like the planned marble statue worth ₹20 crores and ₹163 crore solar project at Morbe Dam.
He allocated funds for improving civic facilities and made efforts to make facilities accessible for disabled people.
Some of his other efforts include the construction of e-toilets and seismic rehabilitation of structures with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation being awarded by SKOCH.
Another popular campaign initiated by Mundhe was “Walk with the Commissioner.”
Every Sunday, he would take a walk and call upon citizens to accompany him. This campaign opened up a direct platform where the residents could lodge their complaints, suggestions, or civic grievances.
Although the programme brought in more public participation, it had the effect of creating differences with the elected representatives.
As per reports, corporators from various political parties declared a bandh against him, whereas citizens started an online petition against his transfer. It is believed that more than 6,000 signatures were collected on the petition.
In 2017, Mundhe was transferred from Navi Mumbai.

During his over two-decade-long stint in public life, Mundhe has been honored for his contributions in various fields such as water conservation, urban administration, public health, transport and social inclusion.

From the profile of Tukaram Mundhe given, it is seen that he has had 25 transfers in 21 years of his career and has often failed to complete the normal three-year period for administrative postings.
While his supporters consider it a reflection of his audacious personality, his detractors have questioned whether his aggressive behavior makes any sort of administrative continuity impossible.
Despite all this, the numerous transfers have made him one of the more recognizable IAS officers in Maharashtra.
As a Commissioner of Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration, Tukaram Mundhe is at present concentrating on the safety of food and drugs.
In an attempt to tackle establishments found guilty of flouting safety standards, the FDA has conducted raids, seizure operations, shutdown orders, show cause notices, and made police complaints.
The whole operation has drawn wide publicity as some of the establishments affected are long-established and famous businesses.
Mundhe has declared that his crackdown will continue until he finds citizens having safe food and medicines.
