IRCTC Food Quality Row: Fine Imposed After Complaint on Vande Bharat Train
Recently Indian Railways has imposed a ₹10 lakh fine on IRCTC following the food quality complaint on the Patna-Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express. The incident was reported on March 15 and it has triggered strict action. Also the action is not only against the catering agency but also against the service provider. this step indicates the focus on to the improving passenger experience and enforcing accountability in railway services.
The issue rose on train number 21896 where a passenger raised concerns about the quality of food served onboard.
After investigation authorities found problematic in service standards.
As a result Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation was fined with ₹10 lakh.
Additionally the private service provider who is responsible for this has faced a much stricter penalty of ₹50 lakh and the contract was immediately terminated.
Indian Railways serves approximately 58 crore meals every year and which making it one of the largest catering networks in the world.
Even a small lapse can effect the thousands of passengers daily.
Although the complaint rate is very low around 0.0008% each case is taken seriously due to its impact on public trust and health standards.

The Ministry of Railways has clearly described that passenger safety and service quality are top priorities for them.
Over the past three years several complaints related to catering and services have resulted in fines totaling ₹2.6 crore.
In the year 2025 there were three incidents reported of assault by pantry staff and which led to strict legal action by railway authorities and police.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced the series of reforms under the ‘Reform Express’ initiative for 2026.
So far the nine reforms have been approved and they are focusing on both operational efficiency and passenger convenience.
