Jalalabad Renamed Parashurampuri: Centre Approves Name Change Honouring Lord Parashuram

In a move reflecting cultural and religious sentiment, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has officially approved the renaming of Jalalabad town in Shahjahanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, to Parashurampuri. The announcement was made on August 20, 2025, by Union Minister Jitin Prasada, who hails from the region. The change was long demanded by local residents and supported by political and religious leaders who associate the town with the mythological birthplace of Lord Parashuram.

Why Parashurampuri?

  • The town is considered by many to be the mythological birthplace of Lord Parashuram, a revered figure in Sanatan Dharma.
  • The name change aims to reflect the spiritual and cultural identity of the region, replacing what is perceived as a symbol of historical slavery or “ghulami”.

Approval and Notification

  • The Home Ministry has conveyed the approval to the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh.
  • A gazette notification formalizing the change is expected soon, after which the name Parashurampuri will be used in all official records and signage.

Cultural Reclamation

  • The renaming aligns with the government’s broader agenda of replacing names perceived to reflect colonial or foreign rule with those resonating with Indian heritage, religion, and culture.
  • Recent years have seen a surge in proposals to change town and city names across India, often accompanied by public campaigns and political backing.
