Jallikattu 2023 Celebrations: Key Points

  • Several eager young men participated in the sport, which received a fawning round of applause.
  • During the Pongal harvest season, which starts in mid-January, jallikattu is a well-liked sport.
  • The winner is determined by how long the tamer stays on the bull’s hump.
  • It is customarily done as a part of Mattu Pongal, the third day of Tamil Nadu’s four-day harvest festival.
  • The third day of Pongal is devoted to cattle, an essential agricultural partner; the Tamil term “mattu” means “bull.”
  • One side of the debate over the sport maintains that it violates animal rights, while the other argues in favour of preserving the “culture and customs” of the local populace.
  • The Supreme Court’s decision to abolish jallikattu served as the primary impetus for the demonstration.
  • The protests’ largely peaceful atmosphere attracted praise from all throughout the nation, spurring efforts to make several other Indian states’ previously unlawful festivals legitimate.

About Jallikattu Celebrations

A bull (Bos indicus), such as the Pulikulam or Kangayam breeds, is released into a crowd of people during the traditional event known as jallikattu (or sallikkattu), also known as eru thazhuvuthal and mancuvirattu. Participants attempt to grab the large hump on the bull’s back with both arms and hang on to it as the bull tries to flee. In an effort to halt the bull, participants hold the hump for as long as they can. Occasionally, riders are required to ride far enough to remove flags from the bull’s horns.
