Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the celebration of ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’ at Birsa College, Khunti, Jharkhand, on 15th November 2023. Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, also known as Tribal Pride Day, is celebrated to honor the birth anniversary of the revered tribal freedom fighter, Birsa Munda. This occasion also witnessed the release of the 15th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, reflecting the government’s commitment to support farmers and promote inclusive agricultural development.
To mark this historic day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra’ from Ulihatu Village in Jharkhand. This makes him the first sitting Prime Minister to visit the birthplace of Birsa Munda. The yatra is set to cover all districts across the country by 25th January, emphasizing the significance of Birsa Munda’s contributions on a national scale.
Birsa Munda’s impactful slogan, “Abua Raj Ete Jana, Maharani Raj Tundu Jana,” became a rallying cry for tribal empowerment. Despite his young age, he earned the title of ‘Bhagwan’ or Lord due to his dedication to tribal causes. Tragically, he passed away at the age of 25 in British custody at the Ranchi Jail, leaving behind a powerful legacy.
In recognition of immense contributions of Birsa Munda, the Union Cabinet declared November 15, the birthdate of Birsa Munda,’ as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’ in 2021. This annual celebration pays homage to Birsa Munda’s role in India’s freedom movement.
PM Modi inaugurated a museum in Ranchi dedicated to Birsa Munda, highlighting the importance of celebrating tribal culture and its contributions to national development. The museum, situated at the Old Central Jail in Ranchi where Birsa Munda breathed his last, features a 25-feet tall statue of the tribal icon. It also showcases the contributions of other tribal freedom fighters, creating a comprehensive narrative of their struggle.
Adjacent to the museum is a 25-acre memorial park, a collaborative effort between the Centre and the Jharkhand Government. This park stands as a tribute to the indomitable spirit legacy of Birsa Munda and his fellow tribal freedom fighters. The park features a musical fountain, food court, children’s park, infinity pool, garden and other entertainment facilities, providing a space for both remembrance and celebration.
