Justice R V Ghuge, M C Tripathi Recommended as Calcutta and Bombay High Court Chief Justices

Supreme Court Collegium has recommended Justice Ravindra V Ghuge and Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi for appointment as Chief Justices of the Calcutta High Court and Bombay High Court respectively. These recommendations have been made in the Collegium Resolution dated on August 6th. Justice Ghuge, who is the present Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, is recommended for to taking the position of Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court while Justice Tripathi of the Allahabad High Court will be the 50th Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Justice R V Ghuge Recommended for Calcutta High Court

Justice Ravindra V Ghuge is being recommended as the next Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

He has been a judge of the Bombay High Court for about more than 13 years now and became its Acting Chief Justice in June 2026.

He became an acting Chief Justice after Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, who was the 49th Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, was appointed to the post of Judge in the Supreme Court.

Justice Ghuge was born on July 9, 1966. He did his schooling from Saint Xavier’s High School, Kolhapur and graduated in law from Shahaji Law College, Kolhapur and MP Law College, Aurangabad in 1990.

He started practicing law in 1990 at the Bombay High Court and in industrial and labour courts.

Legal Career of Justice Ghuge

Prior to his appointment as a judge, Justice Ghuge argued in about 2000 cases on behalf of workers and trade unions. After that, he argued in about 250 industries’ cases which included multinational companies. He has also argued in the case of the Bar Council of India.

Apart from this, his professional experience includes being a contributory professor who taught LLM students at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University.

He served as the secretary and president of the Bar Association of Industrial Lawyers in Aurangabad.

Justice Ghuge was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court on 21st June, 2013.

Justice M C Tripathi Recommended for Bombay High Court

Justice M C Tripathi has been recommended to be the next Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. With the approval of the Central government, he will become the 50th Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Currently, he is the second most senior judge of the Allahabad High Court and heads the principal bench of Allahabad High Court at Allahabad.

With the appointment, he would be the second Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court to head the Bombay High Court in recent years. The previous one was Justice D K Upadhyaya, the 47th Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Who Is Justice M C Tripathi?

Justice Tripathi was born on 21st June 1966 and obtained his degree in law from Lucknow University in 1990. He enrolled as an advocate on 11th January 1992 and has practiced mostly in civil cases.

He was Additional Standing Counsel for Uttar Pradesh since 2007.

In his professional career, he has acted for many government and public institutions like Kanpur Development Authority, Kanpur Nagar Nigam, Uttar Pradesh Food and Essential Commodities Corporation, Agra Development Authority and Moradabad Development Authority.

Justice Tripathi was appointed as an Additional Judge of Allahabad High Court on 27th September 2013 and became a permanent judge on 10th April 2015.

What Happens Next?

A Collegium recommendation is not enough to conclude the procedure of appointment. Both Justice Ghuge and Justice Tripathi will assume charge as Chief Justices of Calcutta and Bombay High Courts after the Central government’s approval and issuance of notification regarding the same.

Currently, Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty is acting as Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court. If the recommendation gets approved, then Justice Ghuge will succeed him.
