Justice Shree Chandrashekhar Sworn in as Bombay HC Chief

Justice Shree Chandrashekhar was officially sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. The oath was administered by Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan at a formal ceremony held at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai. This appointment marks a significant transition in the judiciary of one of India’s most prominent High Courts.

Justice Chandrashekhar had previously been serving as Acting Chief Justice following the elevation of Justice Alok Aradhe to the Supreme Court of India.

Oath Ceremony: Dignitaries in Attendance

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by several senior officials, including,

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis
  • Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Rahul Narwekar
  • Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti
  • Director General of Police Rashmi Shukla

The presence of top state leadership underlined the judicial significance of the Bombay High Court, which holds jurisdiction over Maharashtra, Goa, and Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

A Distinguished Legal Journey

Justice Shree Chandrashekhar is known for his deep understanding of constitutional and civil law. His elevation comes after years of judicial experience, and his tenure is expected to further strengthen the judicial administration and delivery in one of India’s busiest High Courts.

His leadership follows that of Justice Alok Aradhe, who was appointed to the Supreme Court earlier this year. Justice Chandrashekhar’s prior stint as Acting Chief Justice has provided him with firsthand experience in managing the High Court’s vast caseload and administrative responsibilities.

Significance of the Appointment

The Bombay High Court is not only one of the oldest High Courts in India (established in 1862) but also among the most litigated and influential. The appointment of its Chief Justice plays a crucial role in,

  • Overseeing judicial efficiency and timely case disposal
  • Upholding constitutional values and justice delivery
  • Guiding legal reforms and technological adoption in court systems

Justice Chandrashekhar’s oath comes at a time when High Courts across India are increasingly focusing on digitisation, case backlog reduction, and public access to justice.
