Justice Surya Kant to Become 53rd Chief Justice of India
Justice Surya Kant has been recommended to become the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI), following the retirement of Chief Justice Bhushan R Gavai on 23 November 2025. Once formally appointed, Justice Kant will lead the Indian judiciary until 9 February 2027, marking a tenure of approximately 14 months. This recommendation, made by CJI Gavai to the Union Government, follows the established judicial convention of seniority in appointing the next CJI.
Justice Kant is known for his strong grasp of constitutional law, sensitive approach to social justice, and prior service as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court. Over the years, he has been involved in several high-profile constitutional and rights-based judgments.
The process was formally initiated after the Union Government’s communication on 23 October 2025, asking CJI Gavai to name his successor.
