In a key judicial development, President Droupadi Murmu has nominated Justice Vikram Nath, a senior judge of the Supreme Court, as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). The appointment follows the established convention of assigning the role to the senior-most judge after the Chief Justice of India (CJI). The Ministry of Law and Justice confirmed the nomination via a notification dated November 19, 2025 under the Legal Services Authorities Act.
In his new role, Justice Nath will guide NALSA’s nationwide legal aid initiatives, aiming to enhance access to free legal assistance for marginalised and economically weaker sections of society.
In a parallel appointment, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has nominated Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari as the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC). A gazetted notification was issued by NALSA on November 20, 2025.
The SCLSC plays a vital role in extending legal aid to underprivileged individuals seeking justice in the Supreme Court. Justice Maheshwari will be responsible for policy direction, committee operations, and implementation of legal support programs as per the Legal Services Authorities Act.
