Karnataka’s Move to Safeguard Gig Workers Sets New Benchmark
The State Government of Karnataka has introduced the India’s first digital grievance redressal system for the gig workers. This step will marks the major step towards to protecting the platform-based workers. This initiative enables workers to formally register their complaints related to wages, working conditions and the disputes with digital platforms. As the gig economy in India expands rapidly this system aims to bridge the gap between the workers and employers along with ensuring transparency, accountability and timely solution..
This initiative has been developed by the Karnataka Platform-based Gig Workers Board in collaboration with the Department of the e-Governance Karnataka.
This makes the Karnataka the first state in India to introduce the dedicated grievance redressal mechanism which is specifically designed for gig worker those who are engaged in the app-based jobs such as ride-hailing, food delivery and the freelance digital services.
Gig workers can now submit their complaints via the Integrated Public Grievance Redressal System which is the unified digital platform for registering and tracking grievances.
Key Features of the System
This digital interface is simplifies the access to justice for those workers who are previously lacked formal mechanisms to address their concerns.
One of the main challenges in the gig economy has been the absence of the structured communication channel between the workers and platform companies.
The Gig workers are those individuals who are engaged in the short-term, flexible and the platform-based employment rather than traditional full-time jobs.
