Kenyan Kiptum Breaks Marathon World Record

Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum left the running world in awe as he shattered the men’s world record, clocking a time of just two hours and 35 seconds, to claim victory at the Chicago Marathon on Sunday. He broke the previous record set by Eliud Kipchoge in the 2022 Berlin Marathon.

Kiptum’s Unexpected Triumph

Kelvin Kiptum’s journey to the pinnacle of marathon running has been nothing short of extraordinary. The young Kenyan had previously secured victories in his first two marathon appearances, first triumphing in Valencia and then repeating his success in the London Marathon. However, Kiptum’s record-breaking performance in Chicago surpassed all expectations.

A Historic Moment

Kiptum’s victory marked the third time a men’s world record had been established on the streets of Chicago, but it was the first time since Morocco’s Khalid Khannouchi achieved the feat in 1999. The Kenyan runner’s triumph sent shockwaves throughout the running community, igniting excitement and anticipation for future races.

The Chicago Marathon

Chicago has long been known for its flat and fast course, making it an attractive destination for elite marathoners seeking to achieve their personal bests. Kiptum’s decision to compete in Chicago paid off handsomely, and his victory will undoubtedly inspire others to follow suit.

Sifan Hassan’s Dominance

While Kiptum’s record-breaking run stole the headlines, Dutch sensation Sifan Hassan commanded attention in the women’s category. The 30-year-old Ethiopian-born runner clinched the Chicago Marathon women’s title in an unofficial time of two hours, 13 minutes, and 44 seconds. This remarkable performance not only secured her victory but also established a new course record.

Hassan’s Recent Success

Sifan Hassan’s victory in Chicago is the latest chapter in her illustrious career. Having already won her marathon debut in London earlier in the year, she added another feather to her cap by dominating in Chicago. Hassan, who is the Tokyo Olympic champion at 5,000m and 10,000m, recently secured medals at 1,500m and 5,000m in the World Athletics Championships. Her versatility and exceptional endurance make her one of the most formidable athletes in the world.
