Kirsty Coventry Becomes First Female and African President of the IOC

On June 23, 2025, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) celebrated its 131st anniversary with a groundbreaking moment: Kirsty Coventry, a former Olympic swimmer from Zimbabwe, was officially inaugurated as the first female and first African IOC President.

This historic inauguration took place at the Olympic House in Lausanne, Switzerland, with Coventry receiving the symbolic Olympic key from outgoing president Thomas Bach, marking the beginning of an eight-year presidency.

A Champion and Leader: Kirsty Coventry’s Rise

From Olympic Podium to Olympic House

Kirsty Coventry, now 41, is a two-time Olympic gold medallist in swimming and one of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated athletes. Her journey to the IOC presidency began years ago, not only through her achievements in sport but also through her leadership within the Olympic movement.

She previously served as Zimbabwe’s Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation and has been an active voice within the IOC for advocating inclusivity and athlete empowerment.

A New Vision and Purpose

Family as Inspiration

In her heartfelt inaugural speech, Coventry cited her family, especially her two daughters, as her daily motivation. Addressing her six-year-old daughter Ella, seated in the audience, she said:

A Platform for Hope and Change

Calling IOC leaders “guardians of a platform to inspire and bring hope”, Coventry promised to steer the organization with integrity, openness, and innovation. She acknowledged the importance of listening to all IOC members and fostering collaborative decision-making, a subtle nod to criticisms of her predecessor’s more centralized leadership style.

The End of an Era: Thomas Bach’s Farewell

Twelve Years of Service

Outgoing President Thomas Bach, a German lawyer and 1976 Olympic fencing champion, completed his maximum 12-year term. His emotional farewell reflected his deep connection to the IOC.

He now becomes Honorary President of the IOC and has expressed his willingness to advise Coventry if needed.

Symbolic Ceremony at Olympic House

The handover ceremony took place in a temporary structure inspired by Paris’s Grand Palais, a nod to the recent 2024 Summer Olympics. Despite humid weather and a sudden downpour, Bach and Coventry walked together under an umbrella, symbolizing continuity and cooperation.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

First Official Day and IOC Member Engagement

Coventry’s first day in office included a closed-door session with about 100 IOC members, ranging from heads of state and athletes to billionaires and sports leaders. This session marked her commitment to listening and inclusive leadership.

2036 Olympic Host Selection on the Horizon

One of the major decisions facing Coventry is the selection of the 2036 Olympic host city. Several regions, especially Asia and the Middle East, are positioning bids. Notably, India’s Nita Ambani, a prominent IOC member, was seen closely supporting Coventry during the ceremony, reflecting India’s aspirations to host future Games.
