Lalduhoma Set to Assume Office as Mizoram’s Chief Minister

In a significant political development, Lalduhoma, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leader and legislature party leader, is poised to be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Mizoram on December 8. A Raj Bhavan official confirmed that Lalduhoma, along with other members of his council of ministers, will take the oath of office at 11 am in a ceremony at the Raj Bhavan.

Staking Claim and Governor’s Invitation

Earlier, Lalduhoma met with Governor Hari Babu Khambampati at the Raj Bhavan and formally staked claim to form the government. Following the meeting, the governor extended an invitation to Lalduhoma to take charge and form the new government.

ZPM’s Electoral Triumph

The ZPM emerged victorious in the Mizoram Assembly elections held on November 7, securing a total of 27 out of 40 seats. The electoral success resulted in the defeat of the incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF) led by Zoramthanga.

Priorities and Humanitarian Concerns

Expressing his priorities, Lalduhoma, a former IPS officer and security in charge of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, highlighted his intention to discuss the country’s policy towards refugees from Myanmar. Lalduhoma hopes to address the humanitarian issue and expects support from the central government in managing the influx of refugees.

Refugee Situation in Mizoram

Mizoram currently hosts more than 31,300 Myanmar nationals and over 1,100 Bangladeshi nationals. The Myanmar refugees, primarily from the Chin community, sought shelter in Mizoram following a military coup in their home country in February 2021. Additionally, the Bawm or Mizo community from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts and internally displaced people from Manipur have also found refuge in Mizoram due to various conflicts.
