Mudumalai National Park

Establishment: 1940

Location: Nilgiri district

Mudumalai National Park is located in the Nilgiri Mountains of Southern India. It covers about 321 km and lies between Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala. Protected since 1940, it became part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in 1986 and a tiger reserve in 2007. The park has forests, rivers like the Moyar River, and rich wildlife, including many plants, birds, animals, and fish species.

Mukurthi National Park

Establishment: 1990

Location: Nilgiri district

Mukurthi National Park is a small but important park in the Nilgiri Hills of South India. It covers about 78 sq. km and was created mainly to protect the rare Nilgiri tahr. The park is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and also lies in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has grasslands, shola forests, cool weather, heavy rainfall, and animals like tigers and elephants.

Guindy National Park

Establishment: 1976

Location: Chennai

Guindy National Park is a small protected area in Chennai. It covers only about 2.7 sq km, making it one of the smallest national parks in India. This park is special because it is located inside a busy city. It was once part of the grounds of Raj Bhavan Chennai. The park has forests, grasslands, small lakes, and streams, providing a safe home for many plants and animals.

Gulf of Mannar National Park

Establishment: 1990

Location: Coastal regions of Thoothukkudi and Ramanathapuram District

Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park is a special marine park in the Gulf of Mannar. It includes 21 small islands and coral reefs along the coast of Tamil Nadu, between Toothukudi and Dhanuskodi. The park is part of a larger biosphere reserve and has rich sea life in coastal and shallow waters. Visitors can explore it through glass-bottom boat rides. It was declared a national park in 1980.

Indira Gandhi National Park

Establishment: 1989

Location: Coimbatore district

Anamalai Tiger Reserve, earlier called Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park is a large protected forest in the Anaimalai Hills. It is located in parts of Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts. Declared a tiger reserve in 2007, it covers about 1479 sq km, including core and buffer areas. The reserve protects rich forests and wildlife, especially tigers, under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
