Lithuanian Discus Thrower Mykolas Alekna Shatters Longstanding Men's World Record
Lithuania’s rising star in the discus throw, Mykolas Alekna, etched his name in the annals of athletics history. At the Oklahoma Throws Series meeting in Ramona, the 21-year-old Alekna shattered the longest-standing men’s world record in track and field, hurling the discus to an incredible distance of 74.35 meters*.
Alekna’s remarkable feat surpassed the previous world record of 74.08 meters, set by the legendary German thrower Jürgen Schult in 1986 – a record that had stood for an astounding 38 years. This was a testament not only to Alekna’s exceptional talent but also to his unwavering dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence.
Competing in near-perfect conditions, Alekna showcased his prowess from the very first throw. He opened with a massive 72.21-meter effort, which already surpassed his personal best of 71.39 meters set just a week earlier. This initial throw was a clear statement of intent, as the young Lithuanian continued to push the boundaries of the sport.
Mykolas Alekna’s historic achievement is further enhanced by the fact that he now joins his father, Virgilijus Alekna, as one of the three best male discus throwers in the world. Virgilijus Alekna, a two-time Olympic champion, holds the third-best mark in history with his throw of 73.88 meters from the year 2000.
Mykolas Alekna’s journey to this historic moment has been one of steady progression and unwavering determination. Having first made his mark at the 2016 ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup, the young athlete has since risen through the ranks, showcasing his exceptional talent on the global stage.
With the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris on the horizon, Mykolas Alekna’s record-breaking performance has undoubtedly elevated his status as a serious contender for gold. His ability to consistently produce throws in excess of 70 meters, coupled with his composure under pressure, makes him a formidable opponent for any discus thrower in the world.
