Lovlina Borgohain Confirms India’s First Medal at Commonwealth Games 2026

India got its first medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 before the commencement of the opening ceremony. Kudos to great boxer Lovlina Borgohain who made this possible. The bronze medal winner at the Tokyo Olympics received a direct entry to the last four women’s event in the above-mentioned weight category in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. The absence of seven players in the category gave a bye to Lovlina in the competition, making India’s first medal confirmed, showcasing  the good start the country would be hoping for in the tournament.

How Lovlina Borgohain Achieved India’s First Medal

As soon as Lovlina Borgohain qualified for her first medal, it became a matter of confirming success due to the nature of the competition in which she took part in the women’s 75kg boxing event.

This is because the competition comprises only five pugilists, which assures that Lovlina qualified for the semifinals by virtue of the structure of the event. In line with the Commonwealth Games policies adopting the standard procedure used by international boxing organizations, all semifinalists receiving a medal is guaranteed regardless of the outcome of the match in respect of which they only need to compete only once, in the semifinals.

As such, the first medal in the history of Indian boxing is secured by Lovlina without her participating in the quarterfinals.

Prospect of Lovlina in Semifinals

Now Lovlina could only wait for the date of her bout in the semifinals against Tarona (T.K.B.P.) Taafaki in Scotland.
