Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani Appointed as India’s Next Chief of Defence Staff
The Centre on Saturday appointed Lieutenant General (retd) NS Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of India. He will take charge on May 30, succeeding General Anil Chauhan.
The appointment comes at an important time as the Defence Ministry continues work on military reforms, including theatreisation and greater coordination among the armed forces.
The government issued official orders announcing Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani as the country’s next CDS. He is currently serving as Military Adviser in the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB).
He previously served as the Vice Chief of Army Staff before retiring in July 2025.
Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani is a highly experienced Indian Army officer with nearly 39 years of military service.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, and the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, he was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985.
During his career, he held several important operational and strategic positions in the Army.
Lt Gen Subramani has also completed advanced military and academic training in India and abroad.
The Chief of Defence Staff is the highest-ranking military officer in India and acts as the principal military adviser to the government.
The CDS post was created in 2019 to strengthen integration among the armed forces.
Lt Gen Subramani takes charge at a time when India is focusing on defence modernisation and integrated military structures.
His experience in border operations and strategic planning is expected to help the government continue key military reforms.
The appointment also signals continuity in defence policy after the extension of outgoing CDS General Anil Chauhan’s tenure last year.
