Maharashtra Assembly has passed the Freedom of Religion Bill 2026. This bill is to prevent forced religious conversions across the state. This bill was approved by voice vote and introduced the strict penalties for conversions. This conversions are carried out through coercion, fraud, inducement or marriage. The government stated that the law aims to ensure transparency and protect constitutional rights.

The Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Bill 2026 aims to regulate religious conversions and prevent unlawful practices.

The focus of the bill is on the ensuring conversions are voluntary and not influenced by illegal means.

The Maharashtra state  government clarified that the law is not against any religion but is intended to stop forced conversions.

It emphasize  the transparency and legal accountability and also ensuring that individuals have the freedom to choose their religion without pressure or manipulation.

Strict Punishments Under Religious Conversion Law Maharashtra

This religious conversion law Maharashtra introduced the stringent punishments for those whoa are involved in illegal conversion activities.

This penalties are designed to act as a deterrent.

Conversion through marriage, fraud, or coercion: Up to 7 years imprisonment + ₹1 lakh fine

Conversion involving minors, women, SC/ST or persons of unsound mind: 7 years jail + ₹5 lakh fine

Mass conversions: 7 years imprisonment + ₹5 lakh fine

Repeat offenders: Up to 10 years imprisonment + ₹5 lakh fine

Special Protection Under Anti Conversion Bill India

The anti conversion bill India also provides the special safeguards for vulnerable groups such as minors, women and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

These groups are considered more susceptible to exploitation.

After imposing higher penalties in that type of cases the law aims to ensure greater protection and prevent misuse of influence or authority.
