Maharashtra Clinch Raja Bhalindra Trophy For First Time Since 1994

The recently concluded 2023 National Games showcased an extraordinary display of athleticism, determination, and sportsmanship, with nearly 11,000 athletes from across India participating in 45 different sports. Maharashtra emerged as the undisputed champions, claiming the top spot in the medal tally and securing the prestigious Raja Bhalindra Singh Rolling Trophy for the overall championship.

Maharashtra’s Remarkable Performance

  • Maharashtra secured an impressive haul of 80 gold medals, 69 silver medals, and 79 bronze medals, totaling 228 medals.
  • This victory marked their return to the top position after 1994, ending the Services Sports Control Board’s (SSCB) reign at the top, which had persisted since 2007.

SSCB’s Continued Excellence

  • The Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) maintained their outstanding performance, securing the second position in the medal tally.
  • SSCB athletes won a total of 66 gold, 27 silver, and 33 bronze medals, reaching a commendable total of 126 medals.
  • This underlines the significance of military sports programs in nurturing exceptional athletes in the country.

Haryana’s Strong Presence

  • Haryana, a powerhouse in Indian sports and the state with the most medalists at the Asian Games, claimed the third position.
  • They secured 62 gold, 55 silver, and 75 bronze medals, making a total of 192 medals.

Other Noteworthy Performances

  • Madhya Pradesh secured the fourth position with 37 gold, 36 silver, and 39 bronze medals (112 total).
  • Kerala claimed the fifth position with 36 gold, 24 silver, and 27 bronze medals (87 total).
  • Host state Goa celebrated their best-ever finish at the National Games, securing the 9th position with 92 medals, including 27 gold.

Individual Achievements

Outstanding Athletes

  • The best male athlete of the games was swimmer Srihari Nataraj from Karnataka, with an impressive tally of 8 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze.
  • Gymnasts Sanyukta Prasen Kale and Pranati Nayak of Odisha were celebrated as the best female athletes, each winning 4 golds and 1 silver.

  • The final day witnessed thrilling competitions in various disciplines, with Maharashtra having already secured their top position.
  • Amandeep Drall of Punjab shone at the Delhi Golf Course, winning individual and team gold medals in the women’s event.

Diverse Sporting Achievements

  • Yashas Chandra of Karnataka claimed gold in the men’s golf category.
  • Maharashtra continued its dominance in Yogasana, winning three out of five gold medals on offer.
  • Various shooting events saw Abhidnya Patil, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Lakshay Sheoran, and Rajeshwari Kumari securing gold medals for their respective states.

Road Race and Handball Triumphs

  • Harveer Singh of Punjab clinched gold in the men’s 120km road race event, and Monika Jat of Rajasthan won gold in the women’s 30km time trial.
  • In the handball finals, SSCB and Haryana emerged victorious, claiming the gold in this exciting team sport.
