Maharashtra Day is celebrated on May 1st every year and it marks the formation of the state of the Maharashtra as the separate state in the year 1960. The day is also known as the Maharashtra Divas and this day reflects the strong identity, unity and the cultural pride of Marathi-speaking people. This day is not just a public holiday but the reminder of the long struggle which have led to the creation of a linguistically unified state after the independence.
The reason behind the celebrating Maharashtra Day on May 1 lies in the historic political decision. On this day in the year 1960 this bilingual Bombay State was divided into the two states.
The division was carried out under the Bombay Reorganisation Act and it officially giving birth to Maharashtra as the separate state.
The roots of the Maharashtra Day can trace ack to the early 20th century when the Indian National Congress supported the idea of the linguistic states.
However this movement have gained the real momentum after the India’s independence in 1947.
In the year 1956 the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti was formed to demand the separate state for Marathi-speaking people.
