The Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree Scheme is a important government initiative run by the Maharashtra Government with the aim of improving the social position and financial security of girl children. The Women and Child Development Department of the state implemented the scheme on 1 August 2017 and it aims to discourage female foeticide and encourage family planning and sex ratio balance.
The scheme offers fixed deposit benefits to families who meet its eligibility criteria, which includes an account that will mature once the girl child turns 18. Parents can also withdraw the interest earned after every six years of the scheme duration.
