Manipur Tops Northeast in Violent Crimes, Rioting: NCRB 2023
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for 2023 has revealed alarming figures for Manipur, making it the state with the highest number of violent crimes and rioting cases in the entire Northeast region.
The sharp rise in crime was largely attributed to the ethnic conflict that broke out in May 2023 between the Meiteis of Imphal Valley and the tribal Kuki communities from the adjoining hill districts. The prolonged violence has claimed more than 260 lives and displaced thousands, pushing the state into a law-and-order crisis.
After Manipur, Assam ranked second, with 11,552 violent crime cases in 2023. However, the gap highlights the extraordinary rise in violence in Manipur compared to previous years.
The data underscores the devastating impact of ethnic violence and political instability on law and order in Manipur. The massive jump in violent crimes—from just 631 in 2022 to over 14,000 in 2023—points to an urgent need for restoration of peace, justice, and rehabilitation for affected communities.
