Showcase by ‘Sagar Parikrama’ from 5th March of Marine fisheries 2022

Marine fisheries sector wealth would be showcase by ‘Sagar Parikrama’ from 5th March. Oceans, the world’s largest ecosystem, covering nearly three-quarters of the earth’s surface, are critical to the economies, security, and livelihoods of lakhs of people in India, which has a 8,118-kilometre coastline spanning nine states and four Union Territories, according to an official statement.

KEY POINTS:

  • It is at the forefront of reforming the fisheries sector by developing fisheries management plans and a legislative framework for effective fisheries governance in order to promote sustainable and responsible development through an ecosystem approach.
  • An evolutionary journey of ‘Sagar Parikrama’ is being planned around the coastal belt to demonstrate unity with all fisherfolk, fish growers, and stakeholders concerned in the spirit of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat.’
  • The ‘Sagar Parikrama’ trip will focus on achieving a sustainable balance between the use of marine fisheries resources for national food security and livelihoods of coastal fisher communities, as well as the protection of marine ecosystems, according to the statement.

EVENT DETAILS:

  • Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairy, will start the initiative on March 5. On March 6, the first leg will begin in Mandvi, Gujarat, and end in Porbandar, Gujarat.
  • The event will be hosted by the Union Ministry of Fisheries and the National Fisheries Development Board, in association with the Gujarat Department of Fisheries, the Indian Coast Guard, the Fishery Survey of India, the Gujarat Maritime Board, and fisherman groups.
  • The Parikrama, which is part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,’ is an attempt to learn about the challenges that coastal fishermen face. In later phases, it would be held in additional Gujarat districts as well as other states and UTs.
