The observance recalls the day that India was freed from colonial rule and acknowledges Indian contribution, be it cultural, economic, civil or scientific, to the USA. The proclamations have come from the Governor of Massachussets, Maura Healey, and the Mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu. This is a reflection of the rising relations between the two countries and also signifies the contribution of Indian immigrants to the USA.
