SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket Stage Believed to Crash into Moon: What Happened and Why It Matters
A four-tonne upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket accidentally struck to the surface of the Moon on 5th of August 2026 and is expected to create a new lunar crater according to scientists. Even though an official confirmation via spacecraft observations is yet to be made, the researchers had anticipated the collision as per their calculations of the trajectory. There is no danger for our planet, however, the occurrence has become widely interesting among the scientific community due to the unique chance it presents to study impact dynamics, lunar geology, and the behaviour of space junk beyond the Earth’s orbit.
The object in question is the upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket which was launched in January 2025 to deliver two lunar landers to space. In the course of the mission, the rocket’s first stage successfully delivered its payload and returned to Earth as programmed, while the second stage remained in space.
Spacex conducted the obligatory manoeuvre for the disposal of the rocket after the mission. Over time, natural gravitational effects of both Earth and Moon, along with solar activity, gradually modified the trajectory of the rocket stage. Hence, the upper stage ended up being set on a collision path with the Moon.
Scientists estimated that the collision took place at approximately 06:35 GMT on 5 August 2026 near the Einstein Crater in the northern part of the Moon at the speed of 8,690 km/h.
This collision was accidental, meaning that there was no deliberate intention to carry out a scientific experiment at all.

It is claimed by scientists that increasing orbital congestion causes the higher probability of collisions that may cause Kessler Syndrome – collisions causing even more collisions and threatening future space expeditions and current satellites.
The Moon is always hit by natural meteoroids but much less often by human spacecrafts.
This unintended collision demonstrates the difficulties in the management of spacecraft post-mission, especially in deep space missions away from Earth’s orbit.
As the plans for a more permanent mission on the Moon through initiatives like NASA’s and SpaceX’s Artemis continue, the need to understand the movement of artificial debris in the lunar space has become more important than ever.
