Triple world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull dominated the Japanese Grand Prix, leading a one-two finish for his team alongside teammate Sergio Perez. Verstappen was in control throughout the race after starting from pole position, claiming his third win from the first four races of the 2024 season.
Verstappen was back to his best after a brake issue in the previous race in Australia saw him retire. He stamped his authority on the race from the start, leading Perez to the first turn and maintaining his lead for the entire race. The Dutchman said the car just kept getting better and better, and it couldn’t have gone any better for him.
Carlos Sainz of Ferrari took third place, ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc, who started from eighth on the grid. McLaren’s Lando Norris finished fifth, while Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso was sixth.
The race was briefly red-flagged on the second lap after a collision between Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and Williams’ Alex Albon, with both drivers crashing into the wall but escaping unscathed. Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu also retired with a gearbox issue later in the race.
Verstappen’s dominant victory has allowed him to take an early stranglehold on the world championship. The championship will resume in two weeks’ time with the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, the first time the event has been held since 2019 before the pandemic.
Overall, it was a dominant display by Max Verstappen and Red Bull, showcasing their strong pace and reliability, which will be a concern for their rivals in the race for the 2024 Formula 1 title.
