Meghalaya has made history by appointing Idashisha Nongrang as the state’s first woman Director General of Police (DGP). Nongrang, a 1992 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, will succeed Lajja Ram Bishnoi, who is set to retire on May 19, 2024.
Hailing from the Khasi community, one of the three matrilineal ethnic communities in Meghalaya, Nongrang’s appointment holds significant cultural significance. The Khasis, along with the Garos and Jaintias, follow a matrilineal system, where descent and inheritance are traced through the mother’s lineage.
Nongrang, currently serving as the Director General of Meghalaya Civil Defence, has exhibited exceptional leadership qualities throughout her career. She previously served as the acting DGP in 2021, demonstrating her preparedness for the pivotal role.
The appointment of Nongrang as the state’s police chief was widely supported by three major political parties – the United Democratic Party, the Voice of the People Party, and the State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party. These parties had advocated for the appointment of a local IPS officer as the DGP and rallied behind Nongrang’s candidacy.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had recommended the names of Nongrang, Ram Prasad Meena (ADG, Border Security Force), and Deepak Kumar (ADG, Central Reserve Police Force) for the coveted position. Nongrang’s selection reflects the state’s commitment to promoting leadership from within and acknowledging the capabilities of its homegrown officers.
Nongrang will serve as Meghalaya’s police chief until May 19, 2026, overseeing the state’s law enforcement agencies and ensuring the maintenance of law and order. Her appointment is not only a testament to her professional achievements but also a significant milestone for women’s empowerment and representation in leadership roles within the state.
Meghalaya, a hill state dominated by matrilineal ethnic communities, has taken a significant stride towards breaking gender barriers with Nongrang’s appointment as the first woman DGP. Her leadership is expected to inspire and pave the way for more women to assume prominent roles in the state’s governance and decision-making processes.
