Mission LiFE

Mission LiFE is India’s global initiative to combat climate change and promote sustainable living to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The idea was first introduced at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow in 2021, emphasizing the importance of a mindful and deliberate lifestyle to reduce wasteful consumption.

On World Environment Day, June 5, 2022, India launched the LiFE Global Movement, encouraging researchers, start-ups, and academicians worldwide to come up with specific and scientific ways to address the environmental crisis collectively.

Mission LiFE follows the P3 model, which stands for Pro Planet People, focusing on a lifestyle of the planet, for the planet, and by the planet. It advocates for a circular economy, where the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle is crucial to balance development, economic growth, and sustainability.

The mission makes everyone trustees of the environment, responsible for nurturing and preserving it. It aims to change our collective approach to sustainability by nudging individuals to practice environment-friendly actions, enabling industries and markets to respond swiftly to the changing demand, and influencing government and industrial policies to support sustainable consumption and production.

By replacing the prevalent use-and-dispose economy with a circular economy defined by conscious and deliberate consumption, the mission is designed to mobilize at least one billion Indians and global citizens to take individual and collective action to protect and preserve the environment from 2022 to 2027.

India’s Dedication to Achieving Mission LiFE

With Mission LiFE, India will implement a scientific and measurable program to put into action the ideas and ideals of LiFE, demonstrating its commitment to combating climate change. The country has one of the lowest annual per capita carbon footprints, at only 1.5 tons, compared to the global average of 4 tons per year. India is also a leader in renewable energy, with the fourth largest capacity for wind energy and fifth for solar energy in the world. Its renewable energy capacity has grown by nearly 290% in the last 7-8 years, and the country has already achieved its target of having 40% of its electric capacity come from non-fossil fuel sources, nine years ahead of the deadline.

The National Hydrogen Mission is another initiative by India to move towards an environment-friendly energy source and help the country and other nations achieve a net-zero carbon footprint. India’s leadership in the International Solar Alliance demonstrates its commitment to promoting renewable energy and reducing the use of fossil fuels. By spearheading the creation of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, India has also conveyed its concept of environmental protection to the world.

India has launched several initiatives to support its fight against climate change, including the National Afforestation Programme (NAP), National Mission for a Green India (GIM), National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), and National Biodiversity Action Plan.

Moving Forward: Individual and Collective Efforts for Climate Action

The fight against climate change demands more than just policy-making, it requires a wider range of support from individuals, families, and communities to protect the environment and the planet, and to help each other during climate-related disasters and extreme weather calamities.

Furthermore, with India assuming the G20 Presidency, it has an opportunity to lead the way in ushering in a new era of sustainability, in keeping with its history, culture, and traditions.
