History of Mother’s day

The first Mother’s day was celebrated by Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia in the year 1908. On 12th May 1998, she held a memorial for her late mother in the church of Grafton, West Virginia. Anna Jarvis wore all white carination but as the custom developed people started wearing red or pink carnations to represent a living mother and white carnations for a mother who was dead.  After this, it was made a ritual in every state.

In the year 1914 us press Woodrow Wilson declared Mother’s day as a national holiday. This went on for years and after some time people started including others such as grandmothers and aunts who played mothering roles. Anna Jarvis tried to abolish the holiday which was started because of her. She wanted it to be a day, particularly for mothers but people started making it for others too.
